A first timer to Ad Hoc Dance- a male in his 50's- in May 2010, wrote,
"this was my first time with Ad Hoc, and my first time performing contemporary dance. I enjoyed the Monday night training sessions, the exercise was good for me and I did feel my fitness and flexibility improve over the weeks. The general social aspect of the Ad Hoc group was friendly and supportive....it is rewarding to work co-operatively. Ruth Tyson- Jones is good at motivating our creative ideas and then bringing the physical elements together into a coherent piece. I was impressed by the way our piece came together for a performance."
Superheroes: A unique training opportunity for artists to explore a deaf and disability perspective to Superheroes.
For any artist with an interest in writing/film/animation/digital interactive/movement/drama/devising skills and theatre related visual arts, who would like to develop their working relationship with disability.
Led by Jenny Sealey (Artistic Director of Graeae), Caroline Cardus and associate artists, the opportunity is for two intensive training days, followed by a week in residence in a Wolverhampton school to create a piece based on ‘Superheroes’.
All the work will be supported by BSL signer. Additional access requirements will be met upon individual request.
The school is a Creative Partnerships “School of Creativity” and supports children and young people to achieve full participation in education and society by offering high quality provision for pupils with physical and sensory needs.
•Artists will gain from the experience of shadowing and being mentored by deaf and disabled artists
•Artists will gain experience of working with disabled young people to create art using ideas which relate to their experience
•Artists will gain from the experience of planning a thematic participatory project with a strong artistic vision, involving interdisciplinary art forms, writing, film making, animation, devising, directing, theatre related visual arts, puppet making and digital/mobile/online interactive content
•Artists who successfully complete the training will receive a fee of £350.00
Applicants must be available for ALL of the following dates in Wolverhampton: Tuesday, October 19, 10am-12; Monday and Tuesday November 15 and 16, 10.00am - 4.00pm; Monday, November 29 – Friday, December 3, 9.30am-3.30pm.
An artist said of the last Working Parts training: “It was better than anything I could have imagined - lots of excellent advice and information, some really valuable hands-on experience and the opportunity of working with experienced artists. I'm prepared for the unexpected, and have a framework with tools to be able to adapt to different situations and people."
Ben Payne writer and collaborator on Superheroes said: “The notion of heroism is familiar to us in a range of different contexts: from history and mythology; war and, most commonly, from sport. The Olympics and Paralympics creates a specific context for this creative project as developments in technology now enable disabled people to participate, compete and to surpass the sporting achievements of the non-disabled counterparts.
“How someone communicates, makes it through the day or from one end of the house to the other, is also sometimes defined as “heroic”. Here too, science and technology may have an increasing part to play in our future. From robotics to iPhones, we want the young disabled and deaf people who will form the foundation of this project to think about how such developments might affect their futures: how the distinctions between humans and machines could become ever-more blurred and what that might mean for them.”
How to apply to participate in the training
If you are available and would like to take part in this unique training opportunity, please contact Kim Fuller (fullerk@walsall.gov.uk) with your full details, including why you would benefit from this training.

Artsplan, the training and publications department of Artswork and the in-house training provider of ENYAN (English National Youth Arts Network) are pleased to announce the launch of a NEW Youth Arts Training Course: ‘E-Safety and Youth Arts’.
As with all new Artsplan courses, we conduct a pilot session and use the valuable feedback from participants to develop and shape our courses. This new course is being run as a full day course 10 am- 4.15 pm on the 14th October 201 at Cornerhouse in Manchester.
This one-day course is essential training for anyone using or looking to use the internet, computers and other media technologies when working with young people in the arts. It will provide participants with an understanding and relevant resources to ensure that the young people they are working with can make informed decisions within digital environments.
This course raises awareness of digital footprint and examines e-safety, current legislation and the risks involved when working with new technology, including media production and social networking on the web. The course will inform participants how to incorporate e-safety into their Child Protection Policy and embed the knowledge into their organisation or project. Participants will learn about Acceptable Use Policies and will examine mobile media devices and managing personal media devices.
Rachel Preston, Artsplan Development Manager, commented: “This course will raise participant’s awareness of appropriate local, regional and national issues relating to e-safety, and will increase their confidence in their abilities to escalate and report an incident as necessary and appropriate.”
All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources. Artsplan is subsidising the cost of the training in return for a short 20 minute feedback session with participants at the end of the day. The cost of training has therefore been reduced to £75* (normal training charges vary from £110-£150) which includes all training resources, lunch, refreshments and certification.
