Narcissi. Paintings and Performance by Michael Cassidy, Blackpool Arts Dept ( BADept)

This show is primarily concerned with unearthing the links between painting and performance. Looking at both, painting as a final outcome and as an ongoing process, the show features a live performance work. Named after the flower, which was said to have grown from of the remains of the tragic hero Narcissus who; so captivated by his own beauty, died by his own reflection, ‘Narcissi’ is the first U.K. solo exhibition by Michael Cassidy.

The inspirational and entertaining StopGAP Dance Company presents its new double bill, Trespass

Choreographed by Thomas Noone and Rob Tannion

Tour opens at Weymouth College on 23 September

London premiere at The Place on 20 November

StopGAP is the UK’s most successful small-scale integrated dance company. It’s the only professional company that works with dancers with physical or learning difficulties as well as with non-disabled dancers. It has integration with integrity at its heart. The five performers - Lucy Bennett, Sophie Brown, Laura Jones, Chris Pavia and David Willdridge – have an infectious camaraderie and their warmth and mutual support form a powerful part of the company’s theatrical expression.

For StopGAP’s latest double bill Trespass, choreographers Thomas Noone and Rob Tannion have created two works that defiantly contrast style, soundtrack and creative process.

In Thomas Noone’s Within a lone performer, Laura Jones dancing without her wheelchair, draws us into her imaginary world inhabited by four ghostly apparitions. Spanish composer Pedro Navarrette’s sparring score for harpsichord and Indian instruments provides the base for Noone’s choreography. There are periods of striking unison for the whole company while a series of fast and thrilling duets never lose their emphasis on clarity and precision. Throughout the piece fluid, gentle detail contrasts with simmering aggression and explosive movement.

Rob Tannion choreographed Splinter from an idea by StopGAP’s artistic director Vicki Balaam, inspired by the company’s experiences on tour in Japan. Thrown into another world, will the group survive or splinter? Challenging athletic movement and moments of breathtaking beauty are complemented by Jim Pinchen’s thunderous score and accented by the intense colours of Martina Trottman’s layered costumes. Vicki Balaam comments: “It’s a very revealing piece, you get an insight into the hard work, co-operation and great sense of humour that happens behind the scenes in StopGAP.”

Production of HAMLET available, Black Box

Due to a late cancellation Black Box Theatre Company, Liverpool's leading creative and performing arts company with a reputation for excellence, have a 'hole' in their scheduled touring production of HAMLET, which tours the North West from wc Monday 06 September and concludes with four performances in Rome at the end of the same month.

We are looking for expressions of interest from venues - schools, arts centres, small scale theatres - on a buy in or box office split for dates between 14 and 21 September 2010. We are more than prepared to negotiate and will provide all necessary marketing.

The piece is two hours abridged, has a cast of nine, with minimal set, props, costumes, is an easy get-in / get-out and directed by Manchester Evening News nominated director / playwright and Black Box Artistic director Ian Moore.

It can be tailored to suit any venue and any approach / financial arrangement will be considered; we simply want to fill the gap in the schedule

Interested? Then give Ian a call on 0151 260 3000 or email admin@blackboxmerseyside.co.uk

Free theatre tickets for young people in Bolton north west

The Octagon Theatre, Bolton is delighted to announce that it has been selected to take part in an Arts Council pilot scheme which aims to give more than 63,000 free theatre tickets to under 26 year olds in the north west region over the next two years.

The Octagon Theatre’s Participatory Department Head of Activ8, Caroline Brader, said: “In a world where theatre is not often the first area of interest for young people, we are delighted to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. We believe that theatre can offer unforgettable experiences. Within Bolton we intend to work with targeted groups of young people to ensure that the habit of attending inspiring theatre can be acquired and enjoyed by those who may not previously have been an audience member.”

Young participants of the Octagon Theatre’s activ8 Satellite Youth Theatre in Breightmet, Bolton greeted the news of the project enthuasiatically, saying:

“It’s a good idea as some young people can’t afford to go to the theatre. If it was free we would come to see something at the Octagon. I know some of my friends would like to go and see a show but they can’t as their parents can’t afford it.”

Kyle Conway, another youth theatre participant at the Octagon, who is currently studying Performing Arts at college said, “It’s very good from my point of view as I’d like the opportunity to see more theatre, I can’t always afford it and this will enable me to attend more and progress in my studies. It’s a brilliant idea to introduce theatre to young people who can become the audiences of tomorrow.”

Arts Council England, North West's Interim Executive Director, Aileen McEvoy said: "Venues around the north west have responded to this initiative with energy and imagination. We want young people to grow up with a strong sense of the possibilities the arts have given them. The free theatre offer is an exciting new step in that journey and we're looking forward to working with colleagues in the successful theatres across the region as they prepare for the week of launch activities in February."

The free theatre scheme is supported by £2.5 million additional funding to the Arts Council’s core grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. With more than 200 venues across England taking part and a total of 618,000 free tickets, this scheme will go live across the country on Monday 16 February 2009. A dedicated website will be launched, providing details of all participating organisations in the New Year.

Other theatres in Greater Manchester taking part in the scheme include Contact Theatre, Royal Exchange, Library Theatre, Oldham Coliseum and Bury Met.
